There is a specific kind of hum that exists in a home where kids are truly allowed to be kids. It’s not the quiet, curated silence of a showroom; it’s the sound of screen doors slamming, the distant roar of a motorbike, and the smell of river air settling over the grass as the sun starts to dip.
Last year, I spent a few hours with the Boland family at their home on the river. There was no “posing,” no matching white t-shirts, and zero pressure to be “perfect.”
We just let the afternoon happen.
Following the rhythm of home
When I talk about in-home family photography, people often worry that their house isn’t “ready” or their routine is too “boring.” But to me, the routine is where the love lives.
The Bolands spent their afternoon doing exactly what they would have done if I wasn’t there. We followed the kids as they ran wild through the yard, watched the dust kick up behind the buggy, and caught those fleeting, quiet moments when the chaos settled for just a second.
Motorbikes and River Air
There is something so nostalgic about seeing a father and his kids on motorbikes – that shared language of grit and adventure. Seeing them navigate the property together wasn’t just a “photo op”; it was a glimpse into the legacy they are building right there on the riverbank.
Why the “Everyday” Matters
As a photographer, my heart is always pulled toward the tight shots. The way a small hand grips a handlebar. The mud on the boots. The way the light hits the river at 4:00 PM.
These are the things we think we’ll remember forever, but they are often the first to fade. Documenting the Bolands wasn’t about capturing a “session” – it was about bottling up the feeling of being young, being home, and being loved.
To the Bolands: Thank you for inviting me into your world. It was pure magic.
3 Tips for Your Own In-Home Session
If you’re dreaming of a session like this but aren’t sure where to start, remember these three things:
- Forget the “Clean-Up”: The toys on the floor and the shoes by the door are part of your story. Leave them.
- Lean Into Your Rituals: Whether it’s riding buggies or making toast, do what you love. The camera loves the movement.
- Trust the Magic: You might see a messy Tuesday. I see the humans you love most, exactly as they are.
